SDM Calls on People to join Mass Movement against Burning of Paddy Straw

Shahkot (Jalandhar) 14 September (Jaswinder Azad)- Expressing concern over the environmental pollution caused due to burning of paddy straw, the Sub Divisional Magistrate Shahkot Ms. Navneet Kaur Bal today said that called on the people to join the mass movement against this menace. Presiding over a Block level camp organized by agriculture department at village Kang Khurd Grain Market Ms. Bal emphasized the need to stop this heinous act in the larger interest of our future generations. She said that the pollution caused due to burning of the paddy straw was affecting the populace residing in the state, which was a cause of grave concern for the state government. Ms. Bal said that the need of the hour was to discourage this trend amongst the farmers for which these camps could play an instrumental role.
Ms. Bal called on the people to extend fulsome support and cooperation for  embarking a massive campaign to make the people aware about this dangerous trend. She said that effective steps were being taken to check this menace which was causing substantial damage to the environment adding that the Panchayat which adopt the thought of straw management  would be highlighted and names of such would be recommended for award. ‘The smoke caused due to paddy burning is hazardous for human health besides a grave danger to environment” she added.
On the occasion, Dr Balwinder Singh Chhina said the National Green Tribunal has given the instruction to levy environment cess from the farmers indulging in this practice. He said that Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma has asked the department to organize special awareness camp. He said that now techniques were available for management of straw in the field adding that the department was giving subsidy for installing Super Straw Management @ Rs 50000 subsidy. Dr chinna said that the paddy straw if managed in field will enhance the fertility status of soil. On the occasion Agriculture Officer Jalandhar Dr Naresh Gulati, ACDO Dr Balbir Chand, Dr Harpal Singh, Dr Balkar Chand, Dr Mandip Singh and others also addressed the gathering.
